Rich finishes and textiles play a role in adding warmth, comfort and reassurance. Inspired Elegance involves a deeper story of moody colors, aged and layered finishes, textured fabrics and stately patterns that convey a sense of elegance and comfort. This trend has appeal across generations, even for young homeowners who are leaning toward traditional design yet with a modern twist; this consumer appreciates the old and has a talent for mixing in the new. Seeing in our research, however, we saw that Boomers are more likely to maintain the original design sensibility of their traditional furnishings, making less of an impact than younger consumers.

What is Inspired Elegance?
Partially due to our need to create comfortable surroundings during a time of economic uncertainty- traditional design is classical and mixes well with furnishings from other eras. Rich finishes and textiles play a role in adding warmth, comfort and reassurance. Inspired Elegance involves a deeper story of moody colors, aged and layered finishes, textured fabrics, and stately patterns that convey a sense of elegance and comfort.

This trend has appeal across generations, even for young homeowners who are leaning toward traditional design yet with a modern twist; this consumer appreciates the old and has a talent for mixing in the new. Boomers prefer the timeless beauty of rich wood and detail- adhering to a more classic design approach. Although  this is a generation that increasingly infuses soft modern design into their homes -Boomers are more likely to maintain the original design sensibility of their traditional furnishings, making less of a dramatic impact than younger consumers.

Inspired Elegance: The Story

Jack and Linda feel like teenagers – even though they’re approaching their 60’s.  They’ve been together since college and now that their kids are out of the house they have decided to downsize to a townhouse that won’t tie them down. College professors, their teaching schedules have slowed down, especially as they are nearing retirement and they are looking forward to traveling, golfing, and getting re-acquainted with each other. Despite the smaller floor plan, they don’t want to sacrifice style and plan to maintain a sense of luxury.

Polished but never stuffy, Linda is not afraid of color and loves putting rich, deep hues on the walls.  She favors refined classics but often leans towards oversize patterns for an updated look.

Encouraged by their style savvy children, Jack and Linda are comfortable mixing classic pieces with more contemporary or industrial accents. They also enjoy visiting antique markets on the weekends and picking up vintage, one of a kind pieces.

Layering velvets with silky plaids and subtle metallic accents help to create the luxurious feel Jack and Linda desire.  They also lean towards finishes that are complex and aged – mixing well with their acquired antiques and the lived in look they want for their new home.

Aside from gathering their own vintage pieces, they love to purchase pieces handcrafted by local artisans or from Restoration Hardware. As architectural history buffs, they also frequent the home tour circuit and especially gravitate towards the postmodern work of architect Robert A.M. Stern who they referenced for details when designing their own home.

Jack especially loves the warmth of wood and insisted on light cherry millwork throughout their new home.  The woodwork is complemented by warm, rugged leather and subtle burl accents.
