What is Cottage Industry?

The Cottage Industry trend celebrates a fresh approach to traditional design with casually layered elements and relaxed styling. Retailers have capitalized on faded elegance, finishes with a sense of history and beauty with feminine direction. Polished sensibilities lean towards serene, subdued hues and restrained colors with tastefully rich accents. Light is important in this trend as well as soft colors such as muted shades of sea greens, pale coastal greens and cool softened grays. This trend will appeal to all generations but mainly to Gen Xers with traditional taste and a modern life.

The Story:

Gina, a married mother of two (a boy and a girl), writes a design column for her local newspaper and is attempting to write her first children’s book. Even though day-to-day life is loud and hectic in a good way, her home reflects her desire for a serene and quiet environment.

This is of particular importance, as she does the majority of her work from home and finds that she concentrates best in comfortable surroundings that are light and airy in feel. She recently celebrated her 40th birthday and she feels as if she has just recently come into her own as far as her design eye and style goes and she has been redecorating her Cape Cod home .

Light is important in Gina’s house – windows are abundant, skylights filter warm light into the kitchen and mirrors are placed strategically throughout the home. White is definitely her favorite color, but she does bring soft color in…muted shades of sea greens, pale coastal greens and cool softened grays.

She loves the clean lines and coastal influences of Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel as well as some more unique decorative pieces from Wisteria and Ballard Designs.  A few key finds from flea market trips, a guilty pleasure of hers, are mixed in. She dreams of visiting Paris simply for the idea of browsing the flea markets there and you will find subtle French accents throughout the house.

Gina loves the fact that she works from home and can spend more time in her kitchen, cooking complete meals for her family.  She has put time and money into making it exactly what she wants, as the kitchen is where they all gather and spend time. Glossy white subway tiles create a light atmosphere and are balanced out by a black granite countertop. Vases of fresh flowers (hydrangeas and peonies mainly) are abundant throughout the kitchen as the rest of the house.

Gina’s daily routine includes a writing break in the afternoon where she takes her cup of afternoon tea, along with copies of Coastal Living and British House & Home magazine (which she has imported each month as a special treat)  out on to her cozy back porch. Her view from the porch is of trees for the moment, but she dreams of an ocean view. Her childhood summers on the East Coast are still fresh in her mind and inspire her design to this day. Weathered, distressed finishes remind her of driftwood.
